There are various factors to consider when growing plant seeds.  First off, you need to decide what plants you wish to grow.  Vegetable seeds will not only fill a gap in your garden, but provide you with a season of goodies for your pantry.  Vegetables do require care and attention to keep them in tip top condition, but a little care can reap huge rewards – homegrown veg is not only affordable, but outshines its supermarket rivals by a mile on taste.  Flower seeds are great for those tight on space, and work wonderfully in patio pots and baskets.

You need to think about where you want to grow your seeds.  Propagators are very cheap and work extremely well on a window sill, though the keen gardener may wish to consider investing in a greenhouse.  Not only is a greenhouse the perfect environment for growing seeds on, but makes the perfect habitat for tomato, cucumber and pepper plants, courgettes, aubergine – numerous vegetables and fruits.  It’s important to follow the planting instructions on the packet.  Use the recommended substrate for the best result and take time to prepare it properly.  It’s quite exciting, watching your first batch sprout and flourish, then sit back and watch them grow on, providing proper care.

If you don’t wish to plant all of your plant seeds in one batch, it’s a good idea to store the excess in a tin or other dry container and store it in a cool, dark place to ensure good germination.  Some hybrid vegetable seeds and flower seeds have special characteristics like pest and disease resistance making them worth spending those few extra pennies.

Seeds germinate more successfully indoors because of the protected conditions.  Another advantage is that they are protected from grazers such as birds, slugs, snails and mice, though a number of seeds germinate quite well outdoors, even when sewn in situ.

When purchasing your seeds, you should check the sewing and flowering dates to makes sure they correspond with your requirements.  Also, check the height and spread to make sure the fully grown plant will sit happily in its designated spot.  Plants have different requirements – some like full sun; some full shade, some react badly to drafts.  It’s important to take these needs into account.  Some plants can be particularly fussy.

Depending on the time of year, frost could be a factor so if planting in the chillier months be sure to check the weather reports and provide protection for your seedlings where required.  Similarly, you want to be sure that your seedlings are not exposed to excess strong sunlight, particularly where they are grown up in a propagator, to avoid them becoming dried out and frazzled.

Selecting a suitable container and preparing it correctly goes a long way with growing seeds.  Pots can be used; trays are ideal to keep the potting shed neat and tidy and conserve space.  If the seedling will need to be transplanted later, peat pots and compressed peat pellets do a cracking job, enabling planting directly into open soil.  One thing to bear in mind is to be sure that the containers are clean before planting to aid germination.

A good soil mix is essential for growing seeds into healthy seedlings and ultimately plants.  Suitable compost mixes can be bought from the garden centre or prepared at home, but should be fine grained, loose  and porous.  The mix should be put into the container and must be sterilised to kill of any disease harbouring organisms.

Plant seeds should be kept moist, but not waterlogged.  Never let them dry out.  Your vegetable seeds and flower seeds should be checked daily to see whether germination has taken place.  If seeds have germinated, they will need to be brought out into sunlight for establishment.  It is not the case, however, that all seeds will germinate at the same time, and therefore those seeds that have not yet germinated must be kept covered to avoid them dying off and monitored to nip any sign of disease in the bud, so to speak. By taking adequate care in the initial phase, growing fruit, flowers and vegetables should be a breeze, and one that is extremely rewarding.  We are delighted to bring you a great range of seeds available on eBay today.  Please click the links to the left to browse our categories of flowers, fruit, vegetable and herb seeds.  Our listings are updated daily so be sure to bookmark us.  If we don’t have the seeds you’re searching for here today, we’re sure to have them tomorrow.
